How to Use the Prepayment Penalty vs Rate Calculator

Step 1: Common loan and exit date

Enter common principal, term and months until expected payoff/refinance. Penalty applicability depends on the contract and timing.

Step 2: Quotes and exit costs

Enter each quote’s rate and cash-paid fees. Enter a flat penalty amount or a percentage of the lower-rate loan’s remaining balance at exit; do not assume a universal penalty structure.

Calculate, compare and request a review

Choose Calculate to see your estimate. Change one assumption at a time and calculate again. Contact information is optional. Use the review form or Text a Question when you need help verifying the inputs.

How the Calculator Works

At the same holding date, compare cumulative interest+cash fees. Penalty B=entered flat amount+entered percentage×remaining B balance. Benefit=A financing costs−B costs including penalty. Penalty is suppressed after scheduled payoff.

Example calculation

Hypothetical example, not an available loan offer. If B saves $6,000 interest but adds $5,000 exit penalty and $2,000 fees versus A, its modeled benefit is−$1,000.

How to interpret your results

Positive benefit means Quote B costs less under the entered exit assumptions. Changing the payoff date can reverse the comparison.

Assumptions and factors that change the result

Contract penalty eligibility, step-down periods, interest-based penalties, legal restrictions and actual payoff date must be verified. No automatic penalty rule is inferred.

Frequently asked questions

Will this read the penalty terms from my mortgage?

No. Choose the method and enter the terms supported by your loan documents or payoff quote. Legal limits, expiration dates and contractual exclusions are not determined automatically.

Do these results mean I am approved?

No. The tool calculates the entered scenario. Documentation, property eligibility, program rules and lender review remain separate.

What should I do when an input is uncertain?

Use a documented quote or clearly labeled planning assumption. Change one input at a time, calculate again, and request a review before relying on it.
